Experiencing Cold Weather? How to Save Your Pool Equipment

Catherine Hansen |

Welcome once again to ePoolSupply's blog. Today, as much of the United States is under a severe winter weather advisory, we will be discussing the process homeowners must undergo to ensure their pool and equipment that powers the pool will last through the winter and into the summer.

What Steps Should I Take?

First thing's first: if your pool is already closed and winterized, you have little to concern yourself about! Simply ensure that your pool cover is carrying no standing water, then sit back and watch the snow fall.

If you live in an area where snow, ice, or freezing temperatures are uncommon, you may have an open, non-winterized pool. If you are concerned with keeping your pool equipment functioning and your water open and not frozen, follow these steps to assist in ensuring that you will be able to enjoy your pool this coming summer without the costs associated with replacing valuable parts.

Your ultimate goal is to keep the water moving. To do this, you will want to run your pump 24/7 during the cold snap. Moving water does not freeze as readily as still water, and even if the surface begins to freeze a bit, our goal is to be certain the ice does not penetrate your equipment and pipes. If you have a variable speed pump, set it to a medium speed allow it to run continuously. If you have a single speed pump, allow the pump to run constantly on full power. The valves on your skimmer lines, cleaner lines, drains, and returns should all be open at least partially to allow water to flow easily.

Protecting your equipment pad is also paramount. You can cover the area with a tented tarp and set up a working incandescent lightbulb underneath to provide some much-needed warmth; this can go a long way toward ensuring your pipes and your filter do not crack. Some people have been known to utilize a small heater, but this poses a fire risk and is not recommended. Should you put out a heater, be certain that you do not leave said heater unattended. Please do not leave anything on your pump as it is running; this goes for all motors in your equipment pad.

One may think that running the heater may be a good idea, but all this will do is cost you extra money as the heater runs continuously through the polar temperatures while only providing a few hours of warmth. Allow the continuous circulation to handle moving the water, or purchase a floating water heater to place at the skimmer.

Another note: be sure to have a plan in the event of a power outage. Practice draining your system quickly, as doing so prepares you in the event you need to perform the task on short notice. While the power is off, you will want to drain your pump, filter, and other equipment by removing plugs and lids. Shut your breaker off, open air relief valves, and remove the skimmer basket. Place a cut-up pool noodle inside to prevent ice damage. Cover any exposed pipes and equipment with a tarp, tent, or a blanket.
