With half of the United States undergoing a relentless winter storm, pool owners are likely struggling to keep their pool covers free of ice, snow, and rain. If a solid cover holds too much water or snow, the homeowner runs the risk of having the cover buckle or sag under the weight of the particles. If the cover is mesh, the homeowner will be concerned about the pool filling up with water and flooding their yard. To mitigate these consequences, follow the directions below to help your cover survive through winter and beyond.
Solid Covers
If you are a homeowner who has covered their pool with a solid cover this winter, you have likely noticed that rain, snow, and ice will collect atop. These droplets will accumulate over time, and can eventually cause the cover to sag, rip, and tear from the sheer weight on top of the cover. If snow is piling up, you can use a soft-bristled brush to rid your cover of the snow, taking care to be gentle.
If you're dealing with rain, melted ice, or water from condensation, you can utilize an electric cover pump to ensure your cover stays nice and dry. These cover pumps work by turning on automatically whenever the water is over a certain depth - generally around two inches. Keep in mind that wild animals such as squirrels, birds, and other critters, and pets may be attracted to standing water atop a pool cover. Allowing them to congregate can mean tears in the cover - meaning you will need to purchase a new cover. Prevent this by ensuring all water is removed by utilizing a cover pump, a sump pump (should the water accumulation be out of hand), or a soft-bristled brush. For above-ground pools, you can use cover clips around the outside of the pool; if you have an inground pool, cover weights around the perimeter will assist in keeping animals from your cover. Please do not put bricks or other weights around the perimeter; this can lead to torn covers and can set you back financially as these items can fall in and potentially damage the surface of the pool. As a homeowner, you can also choose to use water bags under the pool cover. These work because most animals become uncomfortable with the shifting surface. Just be certain not to inflate the water bag over 60% as you do not want it to burst under pressure.
Mesh Covers
If you have a mesh cover and you receive a significant amount of rain or snow, you will need to watch the water level in your pool as the mesh will allow water and melted snow to flow into your pool. Check your backyard every week or so to ensure the water level is not above halfway up the skimmer opening. If the water level creeps up, you will need to lower the water level utilizing a sump pump to prevent your yard from flooding.
