Hello! Welcome to the ePoolSupply blog. Today we will be discussing the benefits of installing a sand filter to go with your pool. Are you looking for a more cost-effective alternative to a diatomaceous earth (DE) filter but are unconvinced that a cartridge filter is for you? Here is where you'll learn all about sand filters, the models we here at ePoolSupply recommend to our customers, as well as how to purchase from us.
Benefits of Sand Filters
Sand filters may well be the most cost-effective type of filter one can use with their pool. Sand is generally rather affordable, and it only requires replacement every three to five years. In order to keep the sand clean it will be necessary to backwash the filter each week, but the positive side is that you will not be required to handle the sand during this process. Sand is robust; it does not degrade quickly, and thus should last the consumer four to five years. Once this time period has elapsed (or when your water is not quite as clear as you desire,) it is the time when your filter would require a refill or change of sand. Sand filters handle a high flow rate very well, making them reliable for homes, hotels, resorts, and public pools. As sand filters come with fewer parts than the other available filters, they are easier to operate and maintain. If you have a salt chlorine generator, this may be the best filter option for you; sand filters are not as sensitive to salt than the other filters on the market.
A home or business owner may well choose to utilize glass media - glass made from recycled, polished, non-clumping, and crushed glass - in place of sand; this will provide the added advantage of only needing to be replaced every seven to ten years. Should one choose glass media, they will also notice a decided increase in clarity as glass media filters down to five to fifteen microns while sand provides particle filtering down to 20-40 microns. Glass media also has a smooth, non-porous surface; this will assist in reducing biofilm buildup, thus reducing the amount of chemicals one would require for a crystal-clear pool. An additional benefit of glass media is that your filter will now require 20-30% less backwashing than a filter using sand. This will save the homeowner on water costs, energy costs, and heating costs. An environmentally-friendly alternative to other filters, glass media is made with 100% recycled glass. The glass is resistant to both algae and bacteria as it carries a negative surface charge. This helps to repel particles and to inhibit bacterial and algae growth. If you are a home or business owner with an existing sand filter, you can switch to glass media if you so desire; you will find that using glass media will require less glass media than sand by 15-20%.
