Which Filter is Right for You? The Advantages of Cartridge Filters

Catherine Hansen |

Hello, and welcome to the ePoolSupply blog. Today we'd like to take the time to introduce you to cartridge filters. Cartridge filters are pool filters which work by forcing pool water through a pleated polyester cartridge. This cartridge traps many types of debris and fine particles, including dirt, leaves, oil, and other particles that are unpleasant in a swimming pool. These versatile filters are made for both residential and small-to-moderate sized swimming pools, both saltwater and fresh, so no matter your situation, a cartridge filter may be just right for you.

The Perks of Cartridge Filters

Why should a home or business owner consider a cartridge filter? Let's start with the ease of maintenance these filters bring to the table. Every six to eight weeks, a home or business owner will need to clean the pleated cartridge and check for rips or tears in the polyester fabric. One would only need to deep clean the filter a few times per season; a deep clean consists of removing the cartridge from the housing and then hosing the cartridge down to remove any caught debris. When it comes to replacing the cartridge, this generally comes about after two to five years, meaning the cartridge should last you a good amount of time.

Should you choose a cartridge filter for your pool, you will find that choosing these filters will result in better water clarity than the sand filters on the market; cartridge filters will filter down to 10-15 microns. When you do need to clean the filter, you are not required to backwash. This will save water in areas which are already drought-prone or which have water restrictions in place, with the added benefit of preventing backwash wastewater entering your landscape or storm drains. A homeowner with a cartridge filter will also find that they are saving money on water bills, chemicals, and electricity costs due to the lower pressure the filter needs to operate. Another perk? Cartridge filters are both smaller and lighter than the other choices on the market, meaning they are more likely to fit on your existing equipment pad or to make your equipment pad footprint that much smaller.
