Pentair Kreepy Krauly Legend II Pressure Cleaner Operation & Maintenance

So you have gone ahead and chosen a Pentair Kreepy Krauly Legend II Pressure Cleaner (LL505G) ~ congratulations on your new purchase! As time goes by, you may find that you have some questions regarding the general operation and upkeep of your new machine. We here at ePoolSupply have provided this blog post as a general guide for you to peruse whenever you encounter a task you must perform on your Legend II. Please take a moment to read through this blog post to obtain some useful tips, tricks, and ideas to assist you as you start to operate and maintain your Pentair Kreepy Krauly Legend II pressure cleaner!

Fine Tuning Your Cleaner

Thrust Jet Adjustment

The Legend II comes complete with two thrust jets (EC130) at the rear of the machine. These two jets are provided to alter the direction of the pressure cleaner. If you prefer your Legend II to have increased climbing power, adjust the jets upward to assist with that task; on the other hand, if your machine is climbing too high and sucking air into the cleaner, simply adjust the thrust jets downward to combat the issue. To push your Legend II to the left as it moves through your pool, point the thrust jets to the left (and to ensure your cleaner moves in a rightward direction, position those thrust jets to the right).

Sweep Hose

The Sweep Hose (LLB5G) should gently sweep through the water to stir up any debris as well as to ensure that the debris is taken in by the cleaner. Should you need to alter the motion of the sweep hose, you will need to adjust the screw (370198) on the Swivel Mast Barb (360017) below the Ballast Float (LLA20G). Turn the screw clockwise to decrease the motion of the sweep hose; turn the screw counterclockwise to increase the sweep hose’s motion.

Checking Wheel Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)

To determine whether your Legend II pressure cleaner is receiving the proper pressure, you must begin by turning your pool pump off and then removing the cleaner from the pool. Mark one of the front wheels (360006) with a permanent marker or other writing utensil so you have a reference point where you can count rotations. Once that is complete, ask a friend to turn the pool pump back on while you place the Legend II underwater again, taking care to keep hold of the sweep hose so that it does not slip out of the water to soak you and your poolside decor.

Set a timer for one minute and, during that time, count the number of rotations the marked wheel makes. Please be certain that the Backup Valve (360018) is not cycling at this time. When the timer goes off, the number of revolutions per minute you counted should be somewhere between 25 and 32.

If your cleaner is not quite making it to 25 RPM, there are a few tricks to attempt to bring your Legend II up to standard. First, give the screen located in the Wall Fitting (360024) a good cleaning as even a bit of debris can significantly impact the performance of your cleaner. Next, you will want to clean your Skimmer Basket, Pump Basket, and pool filter to ensure that there are no issues arising from any of those areas. Last, if you are using a 3-way Diverter Valve (263035), adjust the valve to increase water flow to your Legend II.

Should the RPM of your Legend II exceed 32, you will need to slow the cleaner down; to do this, start by slowly unscrewing the Pressure Relief Valve (LL23PM) at the wall fitting. You will do this until the RPM lands somewhere between 25-32. If a diverter valve is being used, you can adjust the valve to decrease the water flow going to the cleaner to lessen the number of revolutions per minute until you end up between 25-32.

Basic Operations

Connecting/Disconnecting Your Legend II

Connecting or disconnecting your Pentair Legend II Pressure Cleaner is quite uncomplicated. However, you must remember that regardless of whether you are connecting or disconnecting the cleaner, you must ensure your pool pump is powered off. To connect your cleaner, take the Wall Fitting and twist lock clockwise from the Wall Adapter. To disconnect the Legend II, simply unlock and twist in the counterclockwise direction. The Wall Adapter will remain in the pool while the cleaner is disconnected.

Turning the Legend II On and Off

As your Legend II pressure cleaner operates off of a filtration pump on your equipment pad, all you need to do to turn the cleaner on or to shut it down is to turn the pump time clock on or off.

Cleaning Your Sand/Silt Bag

Before you begin working with the Sand/Silt bag (360009), allow us to provide you with a couple of handy tips: emptying the Sand/Silt Bag works a whole lot easier when the bag is dry and only filled halfway, so it is rather useful to have a second Sand/Silt Bag on hand to be able to run your cleaner while you are drying the dirty Sand/Silt Bag.

Once you have your second Sand/Silt Bag (or you have decided to make a go of it with your one and only), you will start the process of cleaning your debris bag by carefully unlocking the bag from the vacuum tube. To accomplish this, use your thumb to push the U-shaped closure upward until it snaps open. Your next step is to open up the bag and remove all debris that is inside the bag. Once that is completed, you are ready to close up the bag. This process can be a bit tricky; what you will do is push the middle of the bag inward while bringing edges together in an accordion-style stack. You will then swing the U-shaped snap lock back into place and push, snapping it back into position. You are going to want to be certain the snap lock is completely locked, so give that step some time and attention. Once you are certain the lock is fully secure, you can install the bag back onto the cleaner.

Should your pool accumulate a great deal of debris following an event such as a storm, you will want to run your Legend II in two separate, shorter-than-usual cycles, emptying the Sand/Silt Bag between the cycles. If your pool tends to accumulate a substantial portion of large, sharp debris such as branches, twigs, large leaves, seed pods, etc., on a regular basis, you may wish to invest in a sturdier debris bag that is made to handle such large, rough debris. ePoolSupply has a selection of debris bags to suit your needs and protect your pool equipment from damage.

Periodic Maintenance

Periodic maintenance involves wear items that experts recommend you check, maintain, and replace as required. Per Pentair, the manufacturer of the Legend II, wear items are not covered by warranty.

Wall Fitting Screen

The Wall Fitting Screen is located inside the Wall Fitting. The screen acts as a secondary filter, keeping debris that was missed by the pool’s filter out of the swimming area. Please ensure the Wall Fitting Screen is always in place as running your Legend II without this screen can cause irreparable damage which will not be covered under warranty.

If your Wall Fitting Screen is continuously plugged by debris or otherwise dirty, this can be a sign of issues with your pool’s filtration system. It is suggested that you contact a pool professional who is local to your area to come out and take a look should you encounter this problem.

In order to clean the Wall Fitting Screen as part of your pool’s regular maintenance, simply pull the screen out and rinse it thoroughly before reinserting the screen back into the Wall Fitting.

Please remember to remove the Wall Fitting and to flush the dedicated line prior to using your Legend II cleaner after you have cleaned, backwashed, or repaired your filter.

Tires and Bearings

The tires (360012) of the Pentair Legend II are designed to protect the bottom of your pool and to provide the Legend II with better traction as it cleans. Please take a look at the tires on your cleaner every so often; you will want to notice when the time has come to replace your tires. When the tire has worn to the wear groove, you will know the tire needs to be replaced.

The Wheel Bearings (EC60) are warrantied by the manufacturer, Pentair, to be free of defects. You will know that a bearing is still good when it spins freely.

Roller Rings

Roller Rings (EB10) are designed to protect the sweep hose from damage as it sweeps around your pool. Replace these rings as required, but a good tip to remember is that you can rotate the position of these rings to prevent flat spots from developing, extending the life of each roller ring.

Debris Bags

Every Pentair Legend II Pressure Cleaner comes complete with a Fine Mesh Sand and Silt Bag. These bags are fantastic for picking up everyday debris such as dirt and other small, non-abrasive detritus. These bags are not meant to pick up leaves, twigs, acorns, or other large pieces of environmental waste, as those items can easily pierce holes in the fine mesh material of the bag.

If your pool is located in a nicely landscaped area or any other site where it will regularly accumulate larger environmental debris (such as in a location that experiences intense storms), we highly recommend the purchase of a more durable Coarse Mesh Bag (EU15G). The coarse mesh bag will ensure your debris bag will remain intact as long as possible while also meeting the needs of your pool by effectively clearing both fine and coarse debris.

No matter which debris bag you choose to use with your Legend II, take care to remove the cleaner from your pool prior to the addition of any chemicals. This step will help your cleaner last longer and will ultimately save you money in the long run.

Sweep Hose

The sweep hose gently sweeps through the water and stirs up debris from the sides and the bottom of your pool, helping to ensure those locations remain as clean as possible.

Debris Valve

The Debris Valve (EU9) is located underneath the debris bag. The valve is designed to ensure debris is kept inside the bag; it functions as a check valve in that it allows debris to enter from only one direction. When the debris valve loses its pliability and begins to stiffen, that is how you know it requires replacement.

Cleaning/Back Washing Your Pool Filter

When it’s time to clean or backwash your pool filter, always take the time to disconnect your Legend II prior to starting the process. Once you have finished the cleaning/backwashing process, allow the pool filtration system to run for at least five minutes in order to flush the return lines before reconnecting your cleaner.

Storage and Winterising

When you store your cleaner, you will want to ensure that the Legend II is not stored in direct sunlight to prevent wear and damage to the plastic. When the time comes to store the Legend II for the winter, make certain you have completely drained the cleaner of water and given it plenty of time to dry; freeze damage is not covered under Pentair’s warranty. Please remember to also remove the wall fitting when the time comes to winterize your pool!
