CONTACTOR | HPX1985
contactor, Hayward HPX1985, is an electromechanical switch used in heat pumps, air conditioners, and other electrical devices to control the flow of electricity to high-power components like compressors, fans, and motors.
- Control Signal Activation
- The thermostat or control board sends a low-voltage signal (typically 24 volts) to the contactor's coil for heating or cooling is needed.
- This signal energizes the coil, creating a magnetic field.
- Closing the Circuit
- The magnetic field pulls down a set of contacts (metal plates) inside the contactor.
- This closes the circuit between the high-voltage power supply and the heat pump components, such as the compressor or fan motor.
- The high-voltage electricity (e.g., 240 volts) flows through the closed contacts to power the connected devices.
- Maintaining Operation
- As long as the thermostat continues to send the control signal, the contactor remains energized, keeping the circuit closed and the system running.
- When the thermostat no longer demands heating or cooling, the control stops, and the magnetic field deactivates.
- Opening the Circuit
- When the coil deactivates, a spring inside the contactor pushes the contacts apart.
- This breaks the circuit, stopping the flow of electricity to the heat pump's components, which shuts down the system.
- Key Features of the HPX1985 Contactor:
- Double Pole, Single Throw (DPST): This means it can switch two separate lines (poles) on or off simultaneously with a single throw (one operation). This is common in heat pump systems that require control of multiple electrical lines.
- Rated for 40 Amps: Can handle the high current drawn by compressors and motors.
- Coil Voltage: Operates on 24 volts for compatibility with most thermostat control system
